thyroidstory.mivox.com was started as a simple blog dealing with my new diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Topics include medical information about hypothyroidism, information about hypothyroid medications like levothyroxine (Synthroid) and Armour Thyroid, as well as natural supplements like Thyromine, vincopectine and various vitamins and minerals. The site has now expanded to include discussion forums where other hypothyroid patients can discuss their experiences with hypothyroidism, and share tips for what medications, supplements and weight loss strategies have worked best for them.

Well here we are ... almost 13 months after my last post. I'm really rather crap at this whole "keeping a website updated" thing sometimes, to say the least.

However, I am in fact going to try to at least keep the blog better updated for a while, and add new research and factual information. I'm aiming for at least one new post a week. And a few more changes coming:

  1. I plan to move the blog section of the site back over to a WordPress installation. I've been having bizarre login problems with the Drupal install for months now, and frankly, I don't think it's worth the hassle to figure out.
  2. a. I haven't decided what to do with the forums yet. I have a feeling it will be next to impossible to export the existing forum content into a new forum program, but I'll look around and see what my options are.

Well, after having all sorts of problems switching servers yesterday, I think everything is up and running and should stay that way ... but I'm scared to keep my fingers crossed. ;-)

So, back to On Topic news! I met with my PhA last week, and got a new prescription (yet AGAIN ... AUGH!!!). Taking two 120mg of Armour per day pushed my TSH down to .035, while leaving my Free T's not-very-different from the previous 90mg/day dose (which left my TSH at 2.4, as I recall?). But I'd been losing weight and feeling pretty good, so I practically begged to be left at the 120mg/day dose. No dice.

Well, after all my sites went down for over 24 hours with no communication from my hosting company as to what was going on or when it would be fixed, I have decided to (argh .. for the 5th time in the last two years?!) move to a new hosting company.

You can visit the first post in the forums for an idea of what's going on around here now: How to Use This Site. You'll have to sign up with the new system before you can post in the forum, but it's free and I promise I won't send you spam! ;-)

... I've been a bit snowed with work lately, so I haven't been concentrating as much as I would like on research and writing for this site. However, this weekend I am hoping that will change. With one outside project coming to an end, and some research into bulletinboard discussion area add-ons for this site, I'm hoping to accomplish the following things within the next couple of weeks:

People ask for my advice a lot around here. So, first off, I want to re-iterate a few things: I'm not a doctor. I'm not even an "expert" on hypothyroidism... I was diagnosed back in October, less than six months ago. I have only tried one medication (generic levothyroxin) so far. I can only speak from my own personal experience, and what research I've done online and in books.

That said... It seems the number one piece of advice I end up handing out is: Get a second opinion or get a new doctor. And I stand by that. The number two piece of advice seems to be: Try a new medication or a different dose. I also stand by that. There are multiple medications available for hypothyroidism, and that wouldn't be the case if only one of them worked. There are multiple doses available in each medication, and that wouldn't be the case if it were a one-size-fits-all deal.
