WOW! - I started taking Armour after YEARS on Levothyroxine

thyroidstory.mivox.com was started as a simple blog dealing with my new diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Topics include medical information about hypothyroidism, information about hypothyroid medications like levothyroxine (Synthroid) and Armour Thyroid, as well as natural supplements like Thyromine, vincopectine and various vitamins and minerals. The site has now expanded to include discussion forums where other hypothyroid patients can discuss their experiences with hypothyroidism, and share tips for what medications, supplements and weight loss strategies have worked best for them.

Hi Everyone
Thanks for the great site, Mivox!

Here's my story. When I was 4 years old I had Graves Disease. I was skinny no matter how much I ate, had a rapid pulse, fast metabolism. I had the bulging eyes and the enlarged goiter typical of the disease.

When I was 26, after I had my first child, I had enough of swinging back and forth from hypo to hyper. I decided to take radioactive iodine. The Endo who gave me the radioactive iodine said I had a 5% chance of becoming hypothyroid.

Fast forward one year, and I had no thyroid function at all. Now I am completely Hypothyroid and have to take a full replacement dose of thyroid.

For years I took Synthroid or Levoxyl. For years I battled depression, gaining weight, you know the story, I'm sure. I was given antidepressants and told to eat less.

Finally when I was 48, I saw Mary Shoman's site, and saw that she suggested taking Cytomel with the Levothyroxine. I tried different doses of Cytomel with Levoxyl for 4 years. I felt a lot better, but still was heavy and still didn't feel perfect.

Finally, after much research on the web I decided to try Armour. After two days on Armour, I felt normal. NORMAL. I didn't even know what normal felt like before this. I feel great. My Endocrinologist really pooh-poohed Armour. He thought it was ridiculous that I even try it but he agreed. I have no idea why the doctors are brainwashed into thinking that Armour is bad. My doctor didn't really know how to prescribe the Armour, so we did it by trial and error. He had no idea he was supposed to start me on a small dose, so he gave me 2 grains, equal to 120 mg. It was way too much T3 for me, so I did some research and broke it into fourths, and built up gradually. Now after a month, I am on 2 grains again. I think I should probably be on a higher dose because my weight is still not budging. I had TSH and Free T4 tests done, and both were in the normal range, so my doctor said I shouldn't increase it.

Question: Is 2 grains or 120 mg. enough for full thyroid replacement?

Warm wishes,
Sandy

Submitted by donnaluvskev on Saturday, 31 March, 2007 - 12:44am

Hi, this i my first time, so bear with me. About 2 yrs ago I was feeling awful went to the dr. had thyroid tests done, my tsh was 29.45 she put me on levoxyl and cytomel, it has been 2 yrs just got re tested and now my tsh is 32.740, so she put me on levothroxin @200mcg where before I was levoxyl @ 175mcg. Your TSH is extremely high!

Your doctor actually put you on thyroid medication and didn't re-test for TWO YEARS? I spent the first year after my diagnosis being retested every 6-8 weeks to monitor my blood levels while my medication was adjusted.

You should be going back for a retest in a couple of months to check your TSH again. If your doctor won't monitor your blood levels more closely, I'd recommend finding a new doctor.

Levothyroxine from "Hell"
Submitted by cbprieur on Friday, 13 April, 2007 - 2:50am

B I was on Levothyroxine for 9 months and let me just say I felt like I was on the diet pill from hell!!The only almost saving part was that I lost 70 lbs on it but since starting the Armour I feel like I am becoming human again. My blood pressure was horrible on the synthetic and I am hoping it gets better on Armour. I am still tired but I have only been on it one week so I will go in 5 weeks and have my tsh tested to see where I am at. My doctor kept telling me my test results were "normal" and I should be feeling fine. That is when I took matters into my own hands and went to an endocrinologist.

Finally switched to Armour
Submitted by terilynn on Saturday, 14 April, 2007 - 3:36pm

Hi, I am new here, I could read your comments 24/7 because I have so many questions. I am hypo., 5 weeks on Armour, started on 90mg. then to 115, had heart palpitations, lowered to 105 maybe? Tests showed I needed more so she upped to 120 amd was told to lower a little myself and watch for palpit. otherwise stay at 120. I am confused about lowering and raising doses myself, I find I have tons of energy in am til 12:30-1pm. I take it at 6am-120mg. but since it makes me nervous I been cutting it down a bit after some of the things I read on here. Dont understand the T4 levels etc. let my doc. do that part for now but I want to learn more. Seems that if I take it night I will be up all night. I already have trouble sleeping and I have fibro. When I get regulated will my pains go away? at least a little? Enough for now, any suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks. I love this site!!!!

Armour update - 6 weeks later
Submitted by Guest on Thursday, 17 May, 2007 - 11:02am

I feel better than I have in my life. The Armour makes me feel "normal" whatever that means. I have had a blood test. My Free T4 and TSH were normal. I feel great. No more ups and downs like I had with Synthroid/Cytomel combo, and no more being lethargic with just Synthroid. I am taking 2 grains before bed. That way I can take my calcium supplements twice a day without worrying if it will interact with the Armour. Armour is great!

Armour
Submitted by BW on Wednesday, 25 July, 2007 - 2:59pm

I started on Armour, 1/4 grain with 100 mcg synthyroid. The second day, I felt normal. No aching, weakness, tiredness, foggy feeling. Didn't want the day to end. by 5:00 p.m., I felt like I ran out of gas. 4 days later, does was increased to 1/2 grain in the a.m. along with syn 100mcg. Felt great, end of second day about 5 ish, ran out of energy. What happening? Do I have to slowly increase. When you experience that feeling of wellness, how do you stay there? I take liquid calcium = adrenal supplement at bedtime.

changing armour
Submitted by Guest on Tuesday, 21 August, 2007 - 1:43am

I have been on Armour for 7 months. My osteopath says you cannot raise it like that because it will freak your body out. She waits until my body plateaus with it and then raises it. First time after 30 days, then 60 and then around 75 again. She tests it and goes by how I'm feeling. You cannot jumpso quickly to the desired amount of Armour because your body will reject it or freak out. I tried Synthroid for 6 months and the bdoy aches were always there and may other symptoms. It's slow getting the right does but will be worht it!

Armour
Submitted by Guest on Monday, 10 September, 2007 - 12:05am

I have read several times that whatever your Armour dose is, you are supposed to take only half a dose at a time. That means taking half at one time, and then the other half to complete your dose at a different time during the day. Otherwise, I think that your body is unable to utilze the T3 properly. So, the rule of thumb is, half your dose at one setting, and the other half of your dose latter in the day.

armour dosage
Submitted by Guest on Monday, 14 April, 2008 - 7:34pm

I have just been diagnosed with hypothyroidism myself, and have been doing a lot of research. I have discovered that the recommended way to take Armour is on an empty stomach, and no food or drink for 30 min. You should also divide the doses into 2 or 3 times if that is possible.
