iodine testing

thyroidstory.mivox.com was started as a simple blog dealing with my new diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Topics include medical information about hypothyroidism, information about hypothyroid medications like levothyroxine (Synthroid) and Armour Thyroid, as well as natural supplements like Thyromine, vincopectine and various vitamins and minerals. The site has now expanded to include discussion forums where other hypothyroid patients can discuss their experiences with hypothyroidism, and share tips for what medications, supplements and weight loss strategies have worked best for them.

My doctor suggested that I paint on a half dollar size amount of iodine to my skin and watch and see how fast it dissappears to check if I am iodine deficient? i painted a spot on at 8 am today and by 11 to 12 noon today it was extremely light, by 5 pm it was soaked all in and you could hardly see it. what does that mean? my doc said to continue daily with the spot until it stays dark, then I will know that my iodine is sufficient in my body?
What i want to know, I would think that everyone would absorb the iodine into the skin over a period of time? but what is the average time for a normal person, non iodine deficient, to absorb it in hours versus someone who is iodine deficient? how do I rate the level of my deficiency in hours. it only took a few hours for my spot to fade greatly. what is normal?
I am also mildly hypothyroid and just started 90 mg armour 1x daily. I also use progesterone cream 10 days out of the month for pms.
how long till i will notice any difference with the iodine and the armour?
thanks Karen

Ironically, today I am taking the Iodine Uptake Test, discussed here: http://www.optimox.com/pics/Iodine/loadTest.htm

While I've heard of the Iodine patch test that you are talking about, that seems to me a rather unprofessional, unscientific manner in which to test one's Iodine level.

You might want to ask your doctor to order the test for you.

I also take Armour (3 grains) as well as Progesterone and testosterone creams. Until I start taking Iodoral (provided I need it), I can't give you a good response.

Be careful with iodine

There are several studies demonstrating that people with Hashimoto's should not take any iodine, not evel the low doses contained in most multi-vitamins. They find that iodine causes more damage to the Hashi's thyroid. Many doctors do not offer the Hashi's antibodies tests yet assume that 80% of their female thyroid patients have it. If you do have it or aren't sure, be careful with iodine.

What I learned ...
Submitted by mivox on Wednesday, 10 January, 2007 - 2:04am

I looked into the home "skin patch" test myself a little while ago, and wrote about it here: Iodine Deficiency: Testing yourself, and treatment

It's an easy way to get a general idea if you're deficient or not. The basic guideline, from everything I read is this, "Swab a silver-dollar sized circle on the inside of your arm, and watch it for the next 24 hours. If you are not iodine deficient, the circle should keep a strong orange color for the whole 24 hours. If it fades before then, you could use iodine supplementation."

However, I've also heard more than once that Hashimoto's Thyroiditis contraindicates iodine supplements, so before you start supplementing that way, you should probably look into the possible side effects there so you know what to look out for.
