Sarah - Follow Up (questions about ferritin & lab tests)

thyroidstory.mivox.com was started as a simple blog dealing with my new diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Topics include medical information about hypothyroidism, information about hypothyroid medications like levothyroxine (Synthroid) and Armour Thyroid, as well as natural supplements like Thyromine, vincopectine and various vitamins and minerals. The site has now expanded to include discussion forums where other hypothyroid patients can discuss their experiences with hypothyroidism, and share tips for what medications, supplements and weight loss strategies have worked best for them.

I'm still trying to get my sea-legs in the new format. Sarah, what is the relationship between anti-inflammatories and labs or, specifically, Ferritin? You had inquired about it during the transition time and I've been curious to follow-up. My Ferritin is relatively low (22) and I recommend including it in labs. Iron supplements are already helping my lingering cognitive symptoms and elevated heart-rate. Also, does anyone have a sense of the ration between T3 and T4 in labs? (Mine are 2.8 and 0.79, respectively). As always, thank you for your help.

ferritin

Hi mivox -
Certainly the taking of anti-inflammatories in particular ibuprofen can cause subtl GI bleeding which lowers your iron counts. This in turn contributes to hypo thyroidism. And certainly having low iron/fewer red cells can elevate your heart beat. Anyone dealing with hypo issues should probably be taking iron supplemnts, but do remember to find it in an absorbable form, ie chelated with amino acids. The brand I use is Solgar, they are not cheap but they are good.
Good info here on ferritin
http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ferritin/

It talks about ferrous sulfate and elemental iron, all good, but if it's not chelated....well...as we said before, you might as well suck on a nail! :-D

Do you think maybe licking my cast iron pans would help too? ;-)

(Seriously though, I heard something, somewhere, a long time ago—how's that for an authoritative source?—that cooking in cast-iron cookware can help iron levels ... I wonder if it's true?)

cast-iron

Well, I just went looking around, and found quite aa few reputable-looking references to the idea of cooking in cast-iron to help boost your iron levels: Google results for anemia "cast iron"

I absolutely love my two cast-iron pans, and use them pretty much exclusively, even though I have a set of stainless pans too, and a nice carbon-steel wok.

Any chelated multi-mineral supplement should do a good job of boosting your iron, and supplying other important minerals like selenium and calcium. But just don't take it at the same time as your thyroid medication!

I'd think you could definitely find something good at either of those places ... and the staff at health food stores usually knows a bit about their products too, so they could probably help you find something!

FYI -
The brand I use is Solgar, they do a very good multi vit/chelated multi-min. I also add extra C and E for anti-oxidents, and of course the Omaga oils....
