My current regimen

thyroidstory.mivox.com was started as a simple blog dealing with my new diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Topics include medical information about hypothyroidism, information about hypothyroid medications like levothyroxine (Synthroid) and Armour Thyroid, as well as natural supplements like Thyromine, vincopectine and various vitamins and minerals. The site has now expanded to include discussion forums where other hypothyroid patients can discuss their experiences with hypothyroidism, and share tips for what medications, supplements and weight loss strategies have worked best for them.

Well, here's what I'm going to be taking starting later this week (when my old vitamin packs run out):

Morning:

  • Thyromine (thyroid/adrenal glandular with supportive herbs and amino acids)
  • TwinLab Women's Ultra Daily Multivitamin (has a lot of herbal ingredients on top of a very complete multi-vit ... including selenium and 100% iodine) [added: I read the back of the bottle, and realized the values on the label were for a dose of FOUR capsules. So I'm taking two, which is still more than 100% of most things.]
  • NOW B-50 (I'm debating whether I need this ... The TwinLab multi covers the same nutrients as the B-50. But I figure that just means it's the equivalent of taking a B-100, right?)
  • Schiff "Guided Mineral" Cal-Mag-Zinc (chelated, plus Vit. D for proper absorption) [added: You're supposed to take two of these as well. Eep!]
  • Your Life 500mg Vit. C with Rose Hips (because, hey, I had Vit. C sitting around in the medicine cabinet, and AFAIK you can't OD on C!) After realising I had to take more than one of the other two vitamins, I decided I didn't need any extra C. ;-)
  • birth control pill

Mid afternoon: 30mg Armour
Late afternoon: 30mg Armour
Bedtime: 45mg Armour

I figure taking all my vitamins and birth control in the morning places it as far as possible from interfering with any of my Armour doses, and the Thyromine helps tide my energy levels over 'till the next Armour.

I've been doing this approximate schedule for a couple weeks now, with my old multivitamin packs, and I'm interested to see if I notice any definite changes with the new vitamins. I was on a Schiff 'all-purpose' multi-vitamin daily packet, with 6 pills plus the Thyromine and birth control ... it was a bit much to swallow first thing in the morning, so I'd split the packets into 3 pills one day and 3 other pills the next day, never getting the whole thing at once.

I'm hoping getting on a more consistent "same thing every day" routine might help my energy levels a bit more! As it is, I feel like I've been battling sleepiness ever since I switched to Armour, compared to the synthetic levothyroxine. Although taking the Armour in three doses is working better than two, and the Thyromine helps a *bunch* it's still frustrating to feel drowsy in the middle of the day.

So, if the new vitamins don't make a major difference, I may ask for a combination levo/Armour prescription next time I see the doc ... but I'm getting SO tired of changing my prescription EVERY SINGLE TIME I go in to get my test results, I'm hoping things will pick up/even out soon.

What are YOU taking for a daily "pill regimen", including your prescriptions and supplements? What have you tried that made a really noticable difference out of your non-prescription products?

--

Also: Coming Soon! I got a copy of my medical records from my clinic ... I don't know where I got the idea my starting TSH was only ~14. It was 150 the first time I was tested. Holy cow! So, I'm going to write up a little table of "Test Result X --> Prescription Y --> Test Result Z" etc., along with notes about symptoms as I recall them (and according to my doc's notes).

Questions about Thyromine
Submitted by Guest on Sunday, 20 August, 2006 - 6:38am

I just come across your blog. I also have hypothyroidism but I havent been on any meds for about a year now. I have no insurance. I saw in one of your earlier posts that you ordered Thyromine and I see from this post that you are still taking it plus Armour. Did you every take just the Thyromine by itself and if so how did it work? Also why are you now also taking Armour? The answers may be in your acrhives and while I do plan on going back and reading them I was just really curious and thinking of ordering it myself. Thanks!
My email is

I would appreciate if you could email me and let me know of your experience with the Thyromine. Again thanks!!!

I need Armour ...
Submitted by mivox on Sunday, 20 August, 2006 - 11:07pm

My hypothyroidism is severe enough that no over-the-counter supplement (like Thyromine) would be enough to manage it (and it's a lot more expensive than prescription meds anyhow). But here's more information about Thyromine and my experiences with it: Natural Supplements: Thyromine.

Also, I switched to Armour because I heard a lot of anecdotal reports that people got better symptom relief (especially for cognitive issues like memory and general fuzzy-headedness) when they switched to Armour, so I tried it to see if it worked better for me. So far, it has been better than the synthetic was, but I'm thinking of trying a combination of levothyroxine and Armour next time I see the doctor.

What I am doing
Submitted by Guest on Wednesday, 30 August, 2006 - 6:07pm

I have enjoyed the time you have taken for yourself as well as us.I have tried various vitamins along with my Synthroid and here is were I feel almost human again..
Synthroid 125 mcg
Cytomel 5mg
In the morning and then a shot of Vit B-12 once a week,I was trying that to hopefully stop the hair from falling out and it did (coincidence)as well as give me some energy. I am on my 5th week of the B-12 injections 1 more week and then I will probably drop down to every other week and see how that works. My Dr. wants to take me off the Cytomel but the last time he did that I felt horrible my kidneys hurt and started to fill up with fluid so I am begging to keep it for now. I sometimes think he just wants me to get used to feeling bad.My last TSH was .77 but I don't have any hyperthyroid symptoms, it is were I have found to feel good for me. I still seem to gain weight. Thanks for your words.

I think most of the forum people here have tried it before. I would like to gather more information on the effects that it can have, what must I expect and the like.

Synthroid IS Levothyroxine
Submitted by mivox on Monday, 16 October, 2006 - 6:15am

Synthroid is brand-name levothyroxine, so I can't imagine there's much benefit to taking both brand name and generic of the exact same medication. You definitely should talk to your doctor about your prescriptions, if they mistakenly prescribed both to you at the same time.

And if you're taking one of them without a prescription, I would recommend stopping the extra medication and talking to your doctor about having your prescription adjusted, if you feel you need a higher dose.

Re: My current regimen
Submitted by Ovrmythyroid on Wednesday, 21 February, 2007 - 7:58pm

I have a question. I have been on Synthroid 137 for about 3 months. I have never felt so bad in my life. I had to have radio active iodine treatment twice. I finally got my dr to increase my synthroid in Dec to 137mg. I still feel bad. The Doctor is saying that I may have sleep depervation, but I know it is my thyroid. Cold, Tired, crampy, hairloss and of cours Weight Gain. I gained 60 pounds in one year. I have been reading a lot about this thyromine and was wondering if anyone takes this with their synthroid.

thanks

Synthroid ... try natural?
Submitted by mivox on Wednesday, 21 February, 2007 - 9:44pm

There's no reason you can't take Thyromine with synthroid. If anything, I'd say it might be most beneficial for people who's doctors won't prescribe a natural thyroid medication (like Armour) ... because the herbs are specifically selected for supporting thyroid function and the conversion of T4 to T3, and because the dessicated thyroid may also provide additional thyroid support that a synthetic medication like Synthroid can't provide.

I actually ran out of Thyromine a couple weeks ago, and just ordered more ... I've noticed a definite increase in sleepiness and aching joints since I ran out. At first I thought I might be a little sick, so I waited to see if the achiness went away ... but it hasn't, so I'm
really looking forward to getting back on the Thyromine.

armour vs. synthroid
Submitted by Guest on Friday, 4 January, 2008 - 4:48pm

you should get your doctor to put you on armour.. if they won't ..get another doctor...armour is more natural and seems to work on someone when they aren't getting results with synthroid.
