Hypothyroid Symptoms

thyroidstory.mivox.com was started as a simple blog dealing with my new diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Topics include medical information about hypothyroidism, information about hypothyroid medications like levothyroxine (Synthroid) and Armour Thyroid, as well as natural supplements like Thyromine, vincopectine and various vitamins and minerals. The site has now expanded to include discussion forums where other hypothyroid patients can discuss their experiences with hypothyroidism, and share tips for what medications, supplements and weight loss strategies have worked best for them.

Before the doctor precribed my thyroid medication, she'd already seen blood test results showing "really low" numbers for my thyroid... so she asked about a bunch of symptoms. Because I thought we were looking at a recent problem, I answered "nothing new" or "nothing unusual" to a lot of her questions. Don't make that mistake yourself! When I started researching hypothyroid symptoms online after the appointment, I realized I'd had many common symptoms for years... some for as long as I can remember. Which makes me wonder if it would've ever become so acute, if I'd started treatment sooner?

Look over this list of common hypothyroid symptoms. If you find yourself recognizing a lot of them (either long term, or recent-onset), you may want to request a thyroid test from your doctor!

General Symptoms

  • Gaining weight for no obvious reason (with normal diet and exercise)
  • Can't lose weight even if you diet and/or exercise more
  • Constipation (frequent/severe)
  • Low body temperature (often below 98), sensitive to cold
  • Cold hands and feet (poor circulation)
  • Fatigue/exhaustion (even with 'enough' sleep)
  • Feeling "sluggish" or lethargic
  • Slow hair growth/coarse, dry or tangled hair/hair breakage
  • Dry or scaly skin
  • Sore throat/hoarse or gravelly voice
  • 'Puffy' face/eyes or general edema and/or inflammation
  • Aches and pains in joints, hands and feet
  • New (or increasing) carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Irregular menstrual cycles (longer, or heavier, or more frequent)
  • Impaired conception or history of miscarriage
  • Depression/feeling 'worthless' or sad
  • Restlessness/difficulty concentrating
  • Moody/frequent mood swings
  • Losing interest in regular activities
  • Forgetfulness/feeling 'spacey'

'Extra' Symptoms (more frequent in hypothyroid patients)

  • Lower than normal sex drive
  • Tingling or numbness in hands and feet
  • Recurring or stubborn infections/illnesses
  • Snoring or sleep apnea
  • Shortness of breath/tight feeling in chest
  • Yawning when you're not tired
  • Dry, uncomfortable and/or sensitive eyes
  • Eye tics and/or headaches
  • Tightness or swollen feeling in neck/throat
  • Tinnitus (ringing ears)
  • Frequent sinus infections

armour thyroid medication
Submitted by Guest on Thursday, 13 September, 2007 - 1:54pm

I took synthroid for many years and found it no help at all. I finally found a physician who prescribed Armour. Within 2 weeks. I could tell the difference.

Now, my pharmacist tells me it is going to be withdrawn from the market because it was "grandfathered" in and was not FDA tested.

I'm not sure what I'm to do since I already know Synthroid, or the other like named meds do not work.

I was having symptoms of lightheadedness, dry skin, tinnitus, eye tics basically all of those symptoms you have listed up there define me. I was suffering from all those symptoms for a long time. I first started to feel dizzy all the time so I went in and I knew something was wrong, and so I pursued to ask my mother about our family history, and she told me that everyone on my mothers side was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. So I asked my doctor to do a blood test. My TSH level was at 47 and I am a 20 yr old male who weighs 165 pounds, it was really hight. So I was put on .100mg of levothyroxine. After about a week I was lying in bed and all of a sudden I had an onset of severe dizziness, I went into the E.R and they said I had Labyrinthitis, and inner ear infection that causes vertigo and unbalance. I just want to put out their that if you were just diagnosed with hypothyroidism and you think their may be something else wrong with you... don't be shocked to hear that it is only your thyroid. Everyone hang in their if you are reading this and don't be disappointed about your diagnosis... it is easily well treated.

I am now on .150 mg of levothyroxine after a week I am still lightheadness I am hanging in their and trying to deal with all of this but its hard when going to college and everything. Can someone relate to my symptoms and how long did it take you guys to bring your TSH levels to normal and start feeling good? Can someone help me out?
